New to Blogging/Engagement Story

I am a dabbler. I freely admit that my various hobbies and interests keep me from focusing on one job. I've always loved writing but never "found a voice". Maybe I'll find one by starting this blog.

My friend mentioned DC Nearly Weds calling for nearly weds to join in the listing. Of course being engaged, Miss J thought it might just be the motivation I needed to try this forum for my writing. So, here I am.

Let's get started with the story of my engagement. Though I've been engaged for 2+ weeks, I have no plans made. No ceremony site, no reception site, no wedding dress, no color scheme, no music, etc. But if you read further there are reasons...after the engagement story of course! Ha, the pull to make you read the whole posting!

I am sure several family and friends would not like their names posted. So their names will be substituted with nicknames.

Mister, my fiance, and I have been dating for 4 years, almost 5. There were bumps and bruises along the way. But the past couple of years, we've discussed getting married. This past January, we started shopping around the area for rings. That gave me the go ahead to start perusing rings online. I found several I liked...but wasn't sure about. One of my cousins has a friend who is a jeweler. It just happened that I was visiting a him in NYC and he made a last minute appointment for me to go to their studio. It was Great! This gentleman took a lot of time teaching us about diamonds. We walked away as sure as the sky is blue that we would order from them. As far as I knew, Mister did order.

After the trip to NYC, the jeweler emailed and called several times to Mister. There was some pressure to buy so (Lie #1) my fiance told me he canceled the order. He wanted to make sure I wasn't upset. I told him I was not because we'd find a ring somewhere else. I wanted him to be happy with the experience of buying a ring. So, I let it be. A couple of weeks ago (Lie #2) he visits his mom's to help her with the house work. He was really in NYC picking up the ring. Then I ask for his GPS to drive to a friend's house. I didn't know the area and would feel more confident using it. However, he said (Lie #3) that he loaned it to his mom because her's wasn't working correctly. It had all the NY addresses and I might have seen them. I believe him even though it was in his car in the glove compartment that I chose not to check.

The weather gets warmer and we decide to go hiking. On a beautiful Saturday, we mount the GPS and start driving out. I ask when he got the GPS. (Lie #4) His mom met him at his work to hand it back to him. We stop at a gas station for a fill up. However the gas log is not in the glove compartment. As an aside, I told him I could fill it in...but (Lie #5) he tells me he missed a few and decided to discontinue the practice. I think to myself, we could continue from where he last left off...Little did I know that all the NY trips were logged in there and could not let me see. We drive off to Cunningham Falls in MD. It was packed with hikers, families and pets. Not what he had in mind. We decide to try Chimney Rock. After the first hike I was a little tuckered out but didn't want the day to end. So we start on Chimney Rock. And OH MY GOODNESS, a hiccuping fit starts. I just couldn't stop for a quarter of a mile. Eventually it goes away, and as I huff and puff more, we stop at a chaise lounge type rock. I sling my Camelpak off and start o-so-Emily-Post slurping on my water, checking for ticks, and swatting flies from me. He tells me that he is going to clean his glasses (a pet peeve) and he then calls my name, I turn, and he proposes. I SAY YES. That is how we got engaged.

So I learned that my man can plan and lie really really well. I was surprised and glowing that day.

Then comes the planning stage right? Wrong! Mister and I've got to figure out whether it is kosher for us to elope or whether we have to do a wedding. We are planning sit downs with our respective parents to see their views, wishes, and see where we can compromise. I am also in the middle of a job search and Mister has been pulling 60-80 hour weeks.

But I have been dress shopping, dress pattern shopping, fabric shopping. I've been surfing to look for venues and ideas to focus what I want for the wedding. More on that in the next post.
